North Shore with the girls

On Friday morning I had to get up and go to the gym while the girls got to continue sleeping. Not fun. But then we went and picked up my boss's jeep (thanks boss!) for a fun-filled day on the North Shore.

Sarah and Michele were looking forward to a delicious kalua pig sandwich for lunch, but when we got to Kono's they informed us there would not be any pig for a couple of hours. Too hungry to wait, we went and shared a fruit salad and garlic shrimp plate from Macky's shrimp truck.

The shrimp was delicious and certainly worthy of all the accolades. I guess none of us thought to take a picture of it though...we were really hungry! Michele did take a picture of something else interesting near the truck though. Introducing...wild chicks!

They were awfully cute stumbling around in the gravel. But we didn't have time for cute little fuzz balls. We were off to Alii Beach to re-enact some Baywatch scenes! That plan didn't work out so well, as none of us had ever actually seen Baywatch. We contented ourselves with being amazed by turtles.

This one was closer to the water and still looked a bit wet, so he must not have been out for very long. There was another big ol' honu farther up on the beach that was totally dry and Michele was convinced he was dead. I figured he was just asleep but the repetition of "I think he's dead, he must be dead" started to make me a little panicky, until she announced "He opened his eyes!" Luckily the one in the photo was slightly more alive-looking.

We had an almost perfect time at the beach - beautiful weather, tens of turtles playing in the water where we could watch, and no one else there except for the crazy lady who appeared to be panning for gold - and then went back to Kono's in search of some pig. They were closed. We saw a roadside stand promising kalua pig. They were out. So, we had to settle for shave ice at one of the two most famous stands on Oahu: Aoki's (the other is Matsumoto's).

I had honeydew, passionfruit, and raspberry with ice cream, and Michele had honeydew, lychee, and pina colada with ice cream and red azuki beans. Yum! Sarah went and got ginger ice cream and a pumpkin mochi down the street, also very delicious. Sarah, do you remember the name of the ice cream store?

Ok, this post is starting to get unwieldy, so before you all get bored with me I'm going to cut it short. Tomorrow I'll finish the story of Friday with our time at Shark's Cove and girls' night out at Tiki's.

Please vote tomorrow! And, if you're so inclined to take my advice, vote for Obama!
